The
1909 Pittsburgh Pirates had Honus Wagner and Fred Clarke on the team
which helped them defeat the Detroit Tigers in the World Series that
year. Fred Clarke hit 3 home runs in the series, he was also manager of
the team.
The
Pirates second World Series Championship was won against the Washington
Senators in 1925. With players like Pie Traynor, Max Carey and Kiki
Cuyler on the team they defeated the Senators in 7 games.
The Pirates were able to come back from a 3 games to 1 series lead by
the Senators. This was the first time in World Series history that a
team was able to come back and win after being down 3 games to 1.
The
Pittsburgh Pirates won their third World Series title in 1960 against
the New York Yankees. The most memorable play of the game occurred in
the seventh inning when Bill Mazeroski hit a home run to win the game.
This was the first time in World Series history that a home run would
win the championship in the seventh game of the series.
The
Pirates fourth World Series Championship was won in 1971 when they
defeated the Baltimore Orioles in 7 games.
The Baltimore Orioles were the defending World Series Champions. The
two teams seemed to be evenly matched, but in the end, the Orioles
could not overcome the playing of Dock Ellis, Steve Blass, Willie
Stargell, Richie Hebner, Bob Robertson, who hit 3 home runs and Roberto
Clemente who also hit 3 home runs and was named MVP.
