The Oakland Athletics
play in the Western Division of the American League. They are more
commonly known as the Oakland A’s and they play their home games
at the Oakland Coliseum.
They started out
playing Major League Baseball in 1901 in Philadelphia, PA where they
were known as the Philadelphia Athletics.
They moved to Kansas
City in 1955 and became the Kansas City Athletics.
In 1968 they moved to
Oakland, CA where they are now known as the Oakland A's. They have been in the World Series 14 times and they have
won 9 World Series titles.

The Athletics
won their first 5 World Series Championships when they were still in Philadelphia and they were still known as the Philadelphia
Athletics.
In 1910 and 1911 they won back to back World Series titles.
They defeated the Chicago Cubs in 1910 and they defeated the New York
Giants in 1911. (The New York Giants would later move to California and
become the San Francisco Giants.)
In 1913 they defeated the New York Giants again to win their third
World Series title.
In 1929 and 1930 they again won back to back World
Series Championships. They defeated the Chicago Cubs in 5 games in 1929
and in 1930 they beat the St. Louis Cardinals in 6 games to give them
their fifth World Series.
After
they moved to California and became the Oakland A’s they would
win 4 more World Series Championships.
With Reggie Jackson and Catfish
Hunter on the team, they won 3 World Series in a row. In 1972 they
defeated the Cincinnati Reds in 7 games, in 1973 they defeated the New
York Mets, also in 7 games and in 1974 they defeated the Los Angeles
Dodgers to win their third World Series in a row and their eighth
overall.
The
1989 World Series turned into the "Bay Bridge Series" when the Oakland
A's faced their rivals the San Francisco Giants from across the San
Francisco Bay.
With Tony La Russa as manager and players like Dennis Eckersley, Mark
McGuire and Jose Conseco on the team, the Oakland A's swept the San
Francisco Giants in 4 straight games to win their ninth World Series
Championship. |

3 versions of the Athletics have had Baseball Hall of Fame players on
the team. The Philadelphia Athletics had Hall of Fame players like Ty
Cobb, Home Run Baker, Rube Waddell, Chief Bender, Al Simmons, Jimmie
Foxx, Eddie Plank, Lefty Grove and Connie Mack.
The Kansas City Athletics had Baseball Hall of Fame players like Whitey
Herzog, Tommy Lasorda, Satchel Paige and Enos Slaughter.
The Oakland Athletics have had Hall of Fame players that include Dennis
Eckersley, Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers, Goose Gossage, Reggie
Jackson, Willey McCovey, Don Sutton, Mark McGuire, Jose Conseco and
Rickey Henderson. Rickey Henderson also holds the franchise record for
most stolen bases.
Other great player that have played for the Oakland A's include Sal
