The Yankees started out
in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles in Baltimore, MD. They moved to New
York in 1903 and became the New York Highlanders. In 1913 they changed
their name to the New York Yankees.
Not
only have they won far more pennants and World Series titles than any
other baseball franchise, they also have probably had more star players
than any other Major League Baseball team.
The
long list includes names like Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle,
Yogi Berra, Roger Maris and the legendary Babe Ruth.
Babe
Ruth and the New York Yankees moved into Yankee Stadium in 1923. Babe
Ruth hit a home run in the very first game at Yankee Stadium. This
first home by Ruth was the start of what would turn into a true
baseball dynasty. Babe Ruth's frequent home runs and popularity with
the fans would give Yankee Stadium the nickname “The House that
Ruth Built”. The Yankees went on to defeat the New York Giants in
the World Series that year to give them their first World Championship.
(The New York Giants eventually moved to San Francisco and became the
San Francisco Giants.)
The Yankees won their
second World Series in 1927 when they swept the Pittsburgh Pirates in 4
straight games. This 1927 team is considered by some fans to be the
best Baseball team in sports history. This team included Babe Ruth who
hit 60 home runs that season. It also included Lou Gehrig who hit 47
home runs and 175 RBI’s. The Yankees lineup that year got the
nickname “Murderers Row”.
The New York Yankees swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1928 World
Series to give them back to back victories and their third World Series
Championship victory. This was the first time that a team had swept the
World Series 2 years in a row.

The Yankees fourth
World
Series victory came in 1932 when they swept the Chicago Cubs.
Game 3 of this series is where Babe Ruth made his famous "Called Shot"
at Wrigley Field which resulted in a home run to center field. The 1932
World Series was
the last time that Babe Ruth would play for the Yankees and it was also
the last time that he would ever play in a World Series.
After Babe Ruth retired
the Yankees acquired another player that would become a major star for
the Yankees. His name was Joe DiMaggio and he helped them win 4 World
Series titles in a row. This was something that had never been done
before. In 1936 the New York Yankees played the New York Giants in the
World Series and defeated them in 6 games. In 1937 they played the
Giants again and this time they defeated them in 5 games. In 1938 the
Yankees played the Chicago Cubs and swept them in 4 straight games to
give the Yankees their third straight World Series Championship. They
also won the 1939 World Series in 4 straight games, this time against
the Cincinnati Reds. This would give them their fourth straight World
Series Championship and their eighth overall.
In the next decade the
New York Yankees would win 4 more World Series titles. They defeated
the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1941, then they defeated the St. Louis
Cardinals in 1943. They played the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1947 World
Series and again in the 1949 World Series. They came away victorious
both times. The 1949 victory gave them their twelfth overall World
Series Championship.
From 1949 to 1953 with
Casey Stengel as manager, the New York Yankees would win the World
Series an unprecedented 5 times in a row. They also won again in 1955
to give them their eighteenth World title. In was during this time
period that Joe DiMaggio retired and Mickey Mantle started playing for
the team. |
With Mickey Mantle and
Roger Maris on the team, the Yankees again won back to back World
Series titles in 1961 and 1962. The duo of Mantle and Maris became
known as the M&M boys. In 1961 they defeated the Cincinnati Reds in
5 games and in 1962 they defeated the San Francisco Giants in 7 games.
At this point the New York Yankees had an incredible 20 World Series
Championships under their belt.
In the seventies with Reggie Jackson on the team, the Yankees again won
back to back World Series Championships. They played the Los Angeles
Dodgers in 1977 and again in 1978. The Yankees won both times in 6
games. The 1977 season is when Reggie Jackson first earned the nickname
"Mr. October" because of his success in the post season.
With Joe Torre as manager, the New York Yankees won the World Series in
1996 and again in 1998, 1999 and 2000. This new version of the Yankees
featured Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada,
among others. In 1996 they defeated the Atlanta Braves in 6 games. In
1998 they swept the San Diego Padres in 4 straight games and in 1999
they swept the Atlanta Braves in 4 straight games.
In the 2000 World Series, the New York Yankees went up against the New
York Mets. This was the first time since 1956 that the World Series
would be played as a "Subway Series". The Yankees won the series in 5
games. |
In 2009 the New
York Yankees won their twenty seventh World Series title by defeating
the Philadelphia Phillies in 6 games. This was also the same year that
they started playing at the new Yankee Stadium.
Other notable players that have played for the Yankees include Alex
Rodriquez, Roger Clemens, Jim "Catfish" Hunter, Bucky Dent, Rich
"Goose" Gossage, Hank Bauer, Wade Boggs, Don Mattingly, Dave Winfield
and many, many more. You can read more about at the official
website of the New York Yankees. |
