The Kansas City Royals play in the Central Division of the American League. Their home games are played at Kauffman Stadium.

The Royals started playing in 1969 as an expansion team. There was another Major League Baseball team that had been playing in Kansas City since 1955. They were known as the Kansas City Athletics but they moved to Oakland in 1967.

The Kansas City Royals have been in the World Series twice and they have won 1 World Series Championship. In 1985 they beat the St. Louis Cardinals in 7 games.

One of the most famous moments in Major League Baseball history can be attributed to the Kansas City Royals. In 1983 in a game against the New York Yankees, George Brett of the Royals hit a two run home run off of pitcher Goose Gossage of the Yankees. The umpires found pine tar on George Brett’s bat afterwards. After finding the pine tar on the bat they decided to dis-allow the home run. George Brett ran out of the dugout and got into a heated argument with the home plate umpire. He was then thrown out of the game. The commissioner of baseball later overruled the umpires and reinstated the home run. The game was resumed a few weeks later and the Royals ended up winning. This became known as “The Pine Tar Incident”.

Besides George Brett, other notable Kansas City Royals players include Frank White, Amos Otis, Mark Quinn and Cy Young award winner Bret Saberhagen.
